Fires Hit Tanjung Puting National Park. Print
Monday, 03 March 2008 19:47
In Tanjung Puting National Park we have recently experienced a completely unseasonable three week dry spell in what was supposed to be the middle of the rainy season. Thankfully we have subsequently had a small burst of rain.

For a while now we have noted that the so-called rainy and dry seasons are far less disparate than they used to be and think that the Bornean climate could be on the receiving end of the El Nino effects. This could be demonstrated no more than by the fact that fires broke out and spread across forests surrounding our Pondok Ambung Research Station last month, when we should be expecting a daily downpour. Over 6 hectares of forest were destroyed and whilst the fires did not reach the primary forest, alarm bells have already begun to ring.

To read Field Conservationist Stephen Brend’s report on the fires and see how you can help, please visit our Wildlife Direct Blog.
