Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station |

|
Pondok Ambung Tropical Forest Research Station lies within one of Southeast Asia’s largest protected areas of tropical peat swamp and heath forest, Tanjung Puting National Park.
This National Park facility has been developed and maintained by the Orangutan Foundation and provides excellent facilities for visiting researchers coming to study the park’s diverse flora and fauna. For example, the station has hosted studies of the false gharial crocodile (Tomistoma Schlegeii), long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and into butterflies and bird diversity.
The research station is positioned in a beautiful location on the Sekonyer Kanan, a black-water river. An established trail network of mixed riverine, peat swamp and dry-land habitat surrounds the station. Located four kilometers upstream is Camp Leakey where, in 1971, Dr Biruté Galdikas began her long-term study of orangutans.
